Unitec Institute of Technology

Waste from the building industry in New Zealand contributes half of all our annual landfill capacity. In 2018 a group of students in the Architecture programme at Unitec explored the possibilities of using waste as a resource and addressing the issue of building construction waste through creative material transformation and public engagement. Two installations previously displayed at major public events merged for Auckland Build 2018 aiming to raise awareness on this critical environmental issue and inspire a more responsible approach to designing and building. Set among key players in the building industry, “Disrupt” proposes a reflection on the idea of disruption and a shift of perception where new potential can emerge, and waste becomes a valuable resource.
